The Murphysboro Apple Festival is now taking applications for the Miss Apple Festival Scholarship Pageant, which is held in September during the Apple Festival.
Applications and a list of restrictions and rules can be obtained by calling Gaye Youngman at 684-4617. A $100 sponsor fee is due with the application.
Gaye Youngman co-chair for the event says, “September seems like a long way off but it is important to get your application in as soon as possible. A lot of planning goes into the event and we have to know how many young women are wanting to be contestants.”
The contest -- which is one of the region's most glamorous and traditional pageants -- is open to all females residing in Jackson County between the ages of 17 and 20 at the time of the pageant. Also they must never have been married and without children. The competition includes swimwear, evening gown, private interview and onstage speaking.
Youngman says, “It is more than just a beauty contest. The interview portion of the contest and being on stage speaking in front of hundreds of people is the heart of the competition.”
In addition to the pageant each participant will be in the Grand Parade and the winner will represent the Apple Festival throughout the year at numerous events.
The Miss Apple Festival Pageant is the longest running event of the festival and is a Southern Illinois tradition.
