  • "Murphysboro was the last sizable community in Southern Illinois with no soccer program.  The communities all around us have soccer programs. It was past time for this to happen," said Murphysboro Soccer Inc. President Jason Spears. With a board of ten people pushing the vision forward, and a strong show of financial support from local businesses, the soccer program is in full swing in Murphysboro.
"We sent home surveys last year through both public and private schools in Murphysboro, and also Trico School District 176. We had 325 people respond that they would encourage their children to participate in a soccer program," said Spears.
The fall program proved to be a great success, with 198 children signing up to play soccer, and 24 teams. "We have 80 children in the kindergarten program alone, and we are anticipating the program to expand considerably in the Spring. I believe this program will grow to over 400 children in the next four to five years," Spears said. "We are right at the numbers I had figured on for our first season. Our program is designed to serve Western and Northern Jackson County, and we will tap into Trico, Vergennes, Elkville, Grand Tower, Gorham, and surrounding communities. We currently have two first and second grade teams, one third and fourth grade team, and over twenty kindergarten age players from Trico."
According to board member Paul Brinker, the first Saturday was "An incredible success. Walking the fields that day, I heard people commenting on how excited they are about the program, and how fun the day was. I heard people cheering their children, grandchildren, cousins, and extended family. A number of people said that it was about time that Murphysboro had a soccer program.  Over all it seemed that the kids and families enjoyed the day that they spent out there."
With such a strong showing of interest, parents can rest assured that the Murphysboro Soccer Inc, program is here to stay in Murphysboro. For more information on Murphysboro Soccer, Inc. visit their website at www.murphysborosoccer.com.
