On 19 January 2012, the Kaskaskia District of the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of American held its annual recognition dinner and award ceremony at the Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale. District Chair John Mead welcomed the adult leader and boy scouts who attended the event.
Since 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster Steve Buhmanm, Troop 4 in Murphysboro, provide an excellent history of the Eagle Scout rank in the USA. Boy Scouts who became Eagle Scouts during 2011 were recognized for their achievement. Those receiving their Eagle Scout rank included Benjamin Whittington, Troop 44 in Anna, Shane Cowsert, Troop 41 in Vienna, Nicholas Barger, Troop 4 in Murphysboro, Michael Kartje, Troop 4 in Murphysboro, William Duetsch, Troop 133 in Carbondale, Moses Gary, Troop 114 in Murphysboro, and Daniel Kirslis, Troop 151 in Carbondale.
Our first District Award of Merit went to Larry Jeralds. Our second District Award of Merit went to Daniel Rockwell, Troop 41 in Vienna. Our 2011 Scouter of the Year award recipient was Stan Palmer. Congratulations to Alan, Susan and AP Benson of Pack 60, chartered to the First Christian Church of Carbondale. They are our Scout Family of the Year. Congratulations to the 2011 Commissioner of the Year, Lucia Cowsert. Our 2011 Venturing Advisor of the Year was Ken Yamamoto of Crew 4, chartered to St. Andrews Church in Murphysboro. Congratulations to our 2011 Scoutmaster of the Year, Steve Buhman, Troop 4, chartered to Knights of Columbus #988 in Murphysboro. The 2011 Assistant Troop Leader of the Year is Gloria Jones of Troop 47, chartered to the First Christian Church of Pinckneyville. This year's Cubmaster of the Year was Trina Thomas of Pack 37 and 60, chartered to the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale and First Christian Church of Carbondale. Katie Russell of Pack 47, chartered to the First Christian Church in Pinckneyville, is our Webelos Den Leader of the Year. Congratulations to our 2011 Cub Scout Den Leader of the Year, Angela Rogers of Pack 112, chartered to Murphysboro United Methodist Church. The winner of the Spark Plug Award was Lorelei Ruiz of Pack 112, chartered to Murphysboro United Methodist Church. And the winner of the Rookie of the Year Award was Michelle Kinkade of Troop 47, chartered to the First Christian Church of Pinckneyville.
Kaskaskia District Executive Angie Kuehl discussed some successes of 2011. Overall youth membership was a 907 total of youth served. The Kaskaskia District scouts collected 36,871 food items in the annual Scouting for Food drive. Scouts sold $96,170 worth of Trails End Popcorn, 70% of which supports local Scouting.
