The Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi recently donated a bench, made by Sanron Concrete of Murphysboro, to Riverside Park in Murphysboro.
The Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi was started in Murphysboro in the 1940's, with membership by invitation only.
The chapter met in homes of its members on the first and third Tuesday of each month. At one time there were as many as 30 members, however current membership has dwindled to nine.
In the 70's and 80's, there were four chapters of Beta Sigma Phi in Murphysboro. They donated to the Sallie Logan Public Library, the Women's Center in Carbondale, Jackson County Special Olympics. Most of all, they have set up a scholarship which is to be given to a "C" student at Murphysboro High School who might otherwise be overlooked.
Their money-making project for many years was selling pecans. The Elks Club has taken over that fundraiser, and as a result will continue the scholarship.
The Omega Chapter still meets once a month for lunch. However, they are no longer affiliated with International. They wanted to leave something for the community, and the scholarship shall be their lasting legacy for years and years to come.
