This Saturday will not be just like any other Saturday in Murphysboro. This Saturday Santa... The man himself... will be spending the afternoon at the Davis-McCann Civic Center.
Santa is coming as the guest of the Murphysboro American and the Bank of Carbondale, Murphysboro Banking Center.
He will be sitting with boys and girls and listening to what they want for Christmas this year.
The American will be taking photos of every child that sits in Santa's lap and these pictures will be published in a special edition of the Murphysboro American just before Christmas this year.
Parents can also pay for framed Christmas photos of their children taken by T.S.S. Photography of Marion for a minimal fee.
There will be candies and cookies and punch and other treats for boys and girls to enjoy while everyone waits turns to sit on Santa's lap or win one of the hndreds of brand new toys that will be given away throughout the afternoon.
Santa will arrive at the Dave-McCann Civic Center, on North 14th Street, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.
The event is for children ranging from ingants to nine years of age..
“This newspaper has always had a heart for children. Before we started this special program there was no place in Murphysboro for moms and dads to take their children to visit Santa Claus and get pictures of their little ones on the lap of the famous old man from the North Pole.”
“Thirteen years ago, we rectified that and the afternoon has grown and grown. For the most part, the event has been held at the Davis-McCann Civic Center other than twice where it was held at American Legion Post 127. This year it will again be held at the Davis-McCann Civic Center on N. 14th St.”
Oliver J. Rathjen, executive vice president of The Bank of Carbondale/Murphysboro Banking Center, said the bank is proud to join forces with the American in sponsoring one of the finest children’s events in our city.
"Our bank has traditionally supported family-oriented events and the Afternoon With Santa is among the best.”
“Plus we have an opportunity to work with our hometown newspaper,” he said. “It’s a good combination all the way around.”
Tiernan said this year’s event will be the best yet.
“Once again, we’ve spared no expense in giving the children of our community a wonderful time with Santa Claus. There will be a host of toys and prizes for the children that Santa’s elves have been busy preparing for several weeks.”
