There is a lot going on in and around Murphysboro over the next week.
Here are some of the activities planned in the upcoming few days.
Scout recruiting
The Boy Scouts of America will hold a recruiting drive for boy scouts and cub scouts at Longfellow Park in Murphysboro from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008.
There will be games and activities and a special appearance by Murphysboro Mayor Ron Williams, Smokey the Bear, Captain Applesauce and other assorted characters.
If your son, grandson or nephew is interested in scouting, come sign up this Friday.
Bonus rides!
The Jackson County Mass Transit District will be providing a free bonus ride with the purchase of a regular 10-ride pass.
The JCMTD Board of Trustees voted at its August meeting to provide the discount to promote the sale of passes and to provide a price break to repeat riders in light of the increases in single-fair rides.
Effective immediately, passes (10-regular rides plus one bonus ride) are currently available as follows: Adults - $30, students - $25 and seniors - $20.

Arthritis help
There will be an arthritis exercise self help course held at the First Christian Church, located at 1501 Pine Street in Murphysboro, on Monday Sept. 15 and Wednesday Sept. 17, 2008 through Wednesday Oct. 22, 2008.
The course will be held each Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon for six weeks.
Dee Brown, a certified arthritis instructor, will teach this six-week educational program designed to expand peoples knowledge about health care and appropriate exercise.
The course is offered by John A. Logan College and the Arthritis Association and costs $64 (No cost to those 60 years old and older). There will be a free $15 book included for the course.
Dog Park
There will be a Murphysboro Dog Park Fundraiser held during the annual Murphysboro Championship BBQ Contest in September.
The People’s Choice BBQ Sauce Contest is open to anyone with a $10 entry fee
The winner will be chosen by public tasting and voting, It will cost $1 per ticket to taste all entries and vote for one favorite sauce.
The winner will be announced Saturday evening at  the BBQ Championship Awards presentation and the winner need not be present to win.
The first place winner will receive $100, a gold medallion and bragging rights.
The second place winner will receive a silver medallion and the third place winner will be awarded a bronze medallion
All proceeds from the fundraiser will to go to the Dog Park which will be located on north 19th street in Murphysboro
The dog park is expected to open in spring of 2009
Volunteers will be needed at the 17th Street Warehouse on Thursday night ,Sept. 18th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to accept entries for the contest and on Friday night, Sept. 19th Êfrom 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20 from from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to sell tickets for tasting and voting.

Clean up Day
It is time to round up your family and friends for the annual Pre-Apple Festival Clean Up Day.
The clean up day will be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 beginning at 1 p.m.
Volunteers will meet at Smysor Plaza, located at 1201 Walnut Street, and light refreshments will be provided.
Remember to bring your gloves and a smile and help make Murphysboro beautiful for the Apple Festival.
The event is sponsored by the city of Murphysboro and Murphysboro Main Street.
Poker Run
The sound of rolling thunder will be heard at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23rd as over 1,000 motorcycles are expected to leave the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on the annual Kroger Poker Run for the Fund.  This is the 8th Annual year that Kroger has hosted a family friendly motorcycle ride through scenic southern Illinois. 
Last year, 986 riders took part in the event along with 120 volunteers.  In 2007, over $35,000 was raised to benefit the work of the Coach Kill Cancer Fund.  The Coach Kill Cancer Fund is administered by Southern Illinois Healthcare and named for former Southern Illinois University, and now Northern Illinois University, head football coach Jerry Kill.  The Coach Kill Cancer Fund provides financial assistance to cancer patients undergoing medical treatments.
The Poker Run for the Fund will be held Saturday, Aug. 23rd with a rain date of Sunday, Aug. 24th.
Registration at the event is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. at the DuQuoin State Fairground by entering Gate  4.  The first bike out will be at 11 a.m. under State Police motorcycle escort.
Registration is $25 for a single rider or $35 for two riders on the same bike.  The registration fee includes: One poker hand each, lunch, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, steak dinner, prizes, entertainment and free parking at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. 
The ride ends at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds VIP tent for a hearty steak dinner, prepared by Great Boars of` Fire and Kroger, at 5:00 pm. 
Entertainment will be on going throughout the evening with cash prizes awarded for the best and worst poker hand.
The highlight of the evening will be the drawing for the winner of a 2008 1200 XL Harley Davidson Sportster. 
Raffle tickets for the bike are $10 each and available at: any Kroger store in southern Illinois or western Kentucky, Black Diamond Harley Davidson in Marion, or Southern Illinois Healthcare. 
Tickets will be available for purchase up until the drawing August 23rd.  For those individuals who would like to support the event but are unable to participate in the ride itself, direct donations can be made to the Coach Kill Cancer Fund website.
