The Big Muddy Monster is back, and he is bringing you the Big Muddy Monster BrewFest.
The Friends of Murphysboro and the Illinois Liquor Mart are teaming up to host the first annual BrewFest in Riverside Park on Oct. 23.
The BrewFest is a play off of WineFest, in which people will pay a small fee and get a sampling cup where they can then walk around Riverside Park and sample as much free beer as they want.
Some of the breweries that are going to be at this festival are Anchor, Arcadia, Bell's, Big Muddy Brewing, Big Sky, Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams), Buckner Brewing, Founders, New Belgium, New Holland, North Coast, Rogue, Schlafly, Shiner, Shipyard, Shmaltz, Sierra Nevada, Southern Teir, and Summit.
There are also going to be demonstrators at the festival. Ryan Tockstein is going to be putting on a home brewing demonstration. Shawn Connelly is going to be putting on a pairing demonstration, which shows how to pair certain beer with certain types of food.
A taste of beer will not be the only thing people can enjoy at BrewFest, but a little taste of country-folk music from the band Fertile Soil. They will be performing live at the Shell in Riverside Park, according to Brad Fager with the Friends of Murphysboro.
The Brewfest will also be thriving with vendors. 17th Street and Palace Pizzeria will be two of the businesses who will be offering food. The Friends of Murphysboro are still in the process of finding more vendors. Anyone interested should contact the Friends of Murphysboro through their email which is on their web page at www.friendsofmurphysboro.com
There will also be other vendors, including one who sells home brew supplies.
The reason for the home brewing demonstration and the home brewing supplies is because the BrewFest is the host of the Home Brew Contest that will be taking place on Oct. 16, and the winner will be announced at BrewFest.
Any non-professional home brewer who thinks they have what it takes to make a mean brew can apply to be in the contest. The entry fee is $5 and the deadline for entry is Oct. 8.
Melissa Lodell, who is the Home Brew Coordinator, says you do not even have to be remotely experienced in home brewing to be a part of this competition. "You don't have to be a beer connoisseur."
First, second, and third place winners will receive ribbons and gift certificates. A Best of Show will also be announced during Brewfest.
Brewfest is on Oct. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverside Park. Tickets can be purchased on the Friends of Murphysboro's website for a discounted price of $17, or at the gate on the 23rd for $20.
Come and dance, eat, and drink up at Riverside Park's first annual Big Muddy Monster BrewFest, where you just might see the Big Muddy Monster once again.
