On March 1st Lillian Cross celebrated her one year anniversary as owner of Curves of Murphysboro. "Women are my ministry, from the church house, to my four daughter-in-laws and one daughter, to the women I have met at my club. I have a desire to help women, whether physically, spiritually, or mentally, and Curves allows me to do just that. We are all born with specific talents, and I have definitely found that my talent is to be that helper to all women."
While Mrs. Cross has always known the importance of listening, hearing and respecting constructive criticism, as the business owner of a club that caters to over 200 members "I have learned to apply it," she said with a smile. "It takes hearing and listening to members needs, their gripes, and concerns and all without being offended. I have broad shoulders, if a member can find it within herself to bring her concerns, then I have enough Godly care within me to listen, and do the best I can to cater to her needs."
"I couldn't do what I do here at the club without my manager Paula Duncan," said Cross. "She has been with me since 2001. She does the club decor, bookwork, paperwork, encourages club members, makes phone calls. She is a God-given manager, and a wonderful friend. She has that foresight into things that I might have missed, and that is a blessing. We work very well together, and Curves of Murphysboro is a blessed club."
And one way that Curves seeks to give those blessings back to the community is through their annual food drive. Curves International has a nationwide food drive "Food for Friends" each March. "Gary Heavin, CEO and Founder of Curves International has a continued passion to reach out not only to women, but to the whole community," said Cross. "He feels for the needs within the community, and one way that he wants to meet those needs is by being a food supplier for local pantries."
"Curves of Murphysboro was blessed in 2009 to collect 2500 pounds of food, and our goal for this year is 3000 pounds," she said. To promote the food drive, Curves offers a $0 service fee to all new members who bring in two bags of nonperishable food items. Curves also asks that it's members bring in two bags of groceries. "We are looking forward to another successful food drive this year," said Cross.
In addition to the food drive in March, Curves will also be joining together as members and going on Lillian's Fitness Cruise July 26-31. "We are going to Canada, New England, and Halifax. The prices are excellent, starting at $623.77, with Thunderbird Travel providing the travel itinerary," said Cross. "This is not exclusive to Curves members, but is available for anyone in the community desiring an affordable, enjoyable getaway, with Curves hosting the event."
"Membership at curves is always open," said Cross. "I am always on a search for women who have decided that healthful living is a must. Curves provides an atmosphere for strength training, cardiovascular training, and stretching and is open to women ages 18 and beyond. Curves also provides a free six week weight loss program for members and nonmembers.
