A community youth program is celebrating a milestone anniversary this Saturday evening.
The Agape Zone Youth, a program through Victory Christian Fellowship, will host a 20 year reunion celebration at its recently finished youth center, located off Route 127.
“We’ve had thousands of kids come through,” Youth Pastor Steve Voorhees said. “Our goal is to get them back [and] see what they’ve done.”
The reunion at the Summit Building will begin at 5:00, followed by a concert by Eddie Jones, a modern gospel singer, at 7:00.  According to his website, Jones has played on stage with famous acts such as Stevie Wonder and P-Diddy.
The Agape Zone Youth program meets every Wednesday night at 6:30 and invites youth 12 and up to attend.  Voorhees said about 80% of the 30 to 50 youth that attend come from low income families.  Voorhees said it is his goal to help them start on a “pursuit of excellence” by teaching responsibility, consideration towards others, and Christ’s love.  He said it is important to focus on the positives in life; despite what a person’s environment may be.
“They’re out there, looking for a little hope,” he said.
Voorhees said Victory Christian Fellowship, which has about 150 members, has always been youth oriented.  The church began work on the Summit Building in 1994.  Now completed, the 10,000 square foot building offers a gymnasium, stage for concerts, cafeteria, and game room.  The funding predominately came from local fundraising efforts.
The youth program, which is run by six volunteers, also reaches out to children in other ways.  Voorhees said for the past two years, about 200 backpacks filled with school supplies have been donated to area children.  Voorhees hopes his their efforts are “significant enough [to make] an impact.”
“If there’s just one kid out there to help,” he said, “then that’s the one we’re looking for.”
