The University Mall’s, in Carbondale, parking lot will serve as a landing pad later this month.
On November 21, a helicopter from the Air Evacuation Lifeteam will touch down as part of The Science Center’s flight education day.
Pamela Madden, Executive Director of The Science Center, said the day will present a unique and exciting way to educate children on the principles of flight.
Those in attendance will have an opportunity to tour the helicopter before a presentation made by Charles Rodriguez, an aviation professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and students from the university’s aviation program. Madden said flight geared activities will also be part of the program.
The Science Center is also set to host a ‘Science Café’ geared for adults. On November 19, Lisabeth DiLalla, a Behavioral Social Science professor at SIUC, will present a lecture on the relationship between twins and cloning. The free program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The not-for-profit Science Center has been serving the Southern Illinois community since 1994. Madden said she feels it has been a valuable resource that before children only received in a larger city. Through either making presentations at schools or hosting field trips, Madden said the center has helped educate children up to 70 miles away. She said her programs are effective because they actively engage children rather than just verbalize a concept.
“We strive to open their minds,” she said. “There’s science going on in your community.”
Madden said she tries to capitalize on having SIU so close by creating opportunities for the community to learn about the university’s work.
“The general public can have access to scientists,” she said. “There’s great science here.”
The Science Center is staffed by about 50 volunteers and funded by private donations and some sales and admission cost. Annual memberships are available for $50. Along with access to the center, members can also visit over 200 museums worldwide with no cost, according to Madden. Special activities are offered every Saturday.
