At 10:05 a.m. last Friday, the Murphysboro Police Department received multiple 911 calls in regards to a traffic crash on Walnut Street (IL Rt 13) at the intersection of Williams Street.
Officers arrived to find a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Zachary Englum had made a left turn into the path of a semi tractor/trailer driven by Thomas Bequette.
After striking the Blazer, the semi tractor/trailer left the roadway, went through a ditch, across the parking lot of Murphy-Wall Bank and struck a light pole. Both vehicles were considered totaled.
Bequette was not injured. Englum had to be extricated from his vehicle by the Murphysboro Fore Department and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was issued a citation for failure to yield turning left.
Amy Cleland, an employee at Murphy-Wall State Bank & Trust in Murphysboro, heard the accident taking place and looked out of the window to see a tractor trailer coming towards the bank window. She immediately sought shelter and called 911.
An investigation into possible involvement of alcohol is pending.
