At 2:34 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, the Murphysboro Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire at 1311 Shomaker Drive.
Upon arrival, flames were showing from the rear of a single story, single family residence. Entry was made and the fire was extinguished. Flame damage was contained to the rear third of the structure, with smoke damage to the rest of the structure. The occupants of the house were able to escape the residence without injury.
Investigation revealed that the fire started in a rear utility room near a clothes dryer that had been used the evening before. Smoke detectors were present and worked. A damage estimate was unavailable.
Car 1, Engine 11, and Engine 9, staffed by six firefighters were on the scene for two hours and 13 minutes.
