The Murphysboro police officer injured last Thursday in a car accident is back home and is on medical leave pending further tests, according to Police Chief Jeff Bock.
Patrolman Mike Hopkins was released from the hospital Saturday after spending two days undergoing tests to determine why his car left the road and struck a home, knocking the porch from its foundation.
“[He’s] doing fine, resting at home, and dealing with whatever situations may arise as far as medical condition,” Bock said Wednesday.
Hopkins’ cruiser struck a home at 1925 Gartside St. around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning after leaving the road for reasons still unknown. He was not on a call and was not chasing a suspect, as some had earlier speculated, say authorities. They have said a medical condition caused the accident.
He will remain on paid medical leave until doctors determine the cause and his activities are restricted until testing can be completed.
“There was nothing that officer Hopkins had done wrong,” said Murphysboro Mayor Ron Williams. “Once they determine what the issue and if it’s not a safety issue for he or for the public then certainly he’s welcome to come back at any point; Mike’s no problem at all.”
