Police continued to investigate a homicide that took place in Murphysboro early last week, and served a search warrant at a residence in the Valley Ridge housing complex on Thursday night.
"We served a search warrant as part of the investigation,'' said Murphysboro Police Chief Jeff Bock.
The search warrant was served in connection with the death of Roger Cole, 44, of Murphysboro.
Cole's body was discovered by Murphysboro Police Officer Jennifer Thompson while she was on patrol at about 5 a.m. last Tuesday. The body was discovered lying on the ground near a fire hydrant on Apple Lane near the Valley Ridge housing complex.
According to a press release from the Murphysboro Police Department, Thompson located Cole lying on a grassy boulevard. She approached the subject to render assistance and discovered that Cole was deceased.
Paramedics arrived and confirmed that Cole was deceased, and investigators from the Murphysboro Police Department and Jackson County Sheriff's Office arrived and began an investigation. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit also arrived to assist in the investigation.
An autopsy performed last Tuesday evening at Carbondale Memorial Hospital showed that Cole died of an apparent gunshot wound. Results showed that Cole died from a single gunshot wound and that death resulted from massive blood loss.
Cole had recently started a transportation company driving people from Murphysboro and Carbondale to a Gilster-Mary Lee plant in Steeleville.
Cole previously worked for Gilster-Mary Lee. He started the transportation service following the closure of another company that had been providing the service.
The Murphysboro Police Department continues to lead the investigation into the homicide, and is getting assistance from the Illinois State Police and Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
Bock said on Friday morning that the investigation is continuing, and that officials are following leads.
"There's something new every couple of hours, it seems like,'' Bock said. "We're following several different leads."
