The Old Rome bar and restaurant in Murphysboro was totaled in a fire last Friday afternoon.
The fire appeared to start in the back of the building, an area that housed freezers, coolers and an outside air conditioning unit.
“The cause was accidental,” said Fire Chief Kevin Reeves.  “We’re looking at electrical work back in the kitchen area.”
Four firefighters from the Carbondale City, Carbondale Township and De Soto fire departments joined the eight Murphysboro firefighters in putting out the blaze.
“It was pretty hot, smoky fire,” said Reeves. “But the firefighters did a good job.”
Firefighters were on the scene for nearly five hours on a day that saw temperature in the middle 80s.
“We toned out at 12:37,” said Reeves. “We arrived on the scene at 12:40 and left at 17:10 [5:10 p.m.].”
It is unclear as of yet the total amount of damage to the building.
“They’re trying to go through and put a dollar figure to it,” said Reeves. “We haven’t gotten that information totally compiled yet.”
The restaurant was not open when the fire started, and no firefighters were injured.
The landmark building, located at 803 N. 9th Street, dated back to the early 1900s.
