McLeod Summer Playhouse’s 2011 season opens Thursday, June 17 with Broadway’s singular sensation A CHORUS LINE. Originally conceived and directed by Michael Bennett, this exciting and riveting musical, which opened on Broadway in 1975, is an intimate look at the lives’ of a group of dancers auditioning for a Broadway show. There’s Cassie, who went from featured roles to the unemployment line; Connie, who never grew taller than four foot ten inches; Richie, who had to face life after high school; Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie who found solace and acceptance at ballet class; and eleven other dancers whose face the challenge of growing up and fighting for self worth.
The show features The Tony award winning music of Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Edward Kleban, and book by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante, and includes such songs as Dance Ten, Looks Three, One (Singular Sensation), I Hope I Get it, and What I Did for Love.
The MSP production features a cast of 25 young talented artists, selected from auditions throughout the Midwest. They include: Elizabeth Wehrli (Cassie), Kim Green (Val), Lawrence O'Neill (Paul), Jacob Lacopo (Mike), Joe Fedore (Richie), Keith Johnson (Don) and Joshua Carroll (Zach, the chorographer and director of the auditions.) Other cast members are: Lauryn Caruso, Mandy Modic, Angie Fisher, Jeanine Holtgrave, Tayloir Pace, Penelope Long, Eileen Engel, Jordan McCoy, Emily Fink, Bailee Endebrock, Zach Sutton, Daniel Switzer, Josh Levinson, Shawn Quinlan, Wes Drummond, Caleb Schaaf, Jacob Hays, Josh Kimball, Joe Capstick
The production is directed and choreographed by Jeff award winner Kevin Bellie, with costumes by Caitlin Entwistle and sets and lights by Mark Varns. Michael Hanes conducts the MSP orchestra.
A CHORUS LINE, is a testimony to the power of the human spirit. The musical is a vibrant, poignant and funny look at people who aspire to achieve their dreams. It is a power packed experience that touches the hearts of audiences. It is rated PG-13, and does contain some adult language and thematic material.
The production plays June 17 – 19 and June 24 – 26, Thurs. and Fri., at 7:30 pm and Sun. at 2 pm. At the McLeod Theater located in the Communications Building on the SIUC campus.
