Over the past few weeks, the Murphysboro Fire Department “Filled the Boot” again this year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The department has participated in this fundraiser for the past several years, and this year they raised $3,000 for MDA. They more than doubled their collections over last year.
“I am so proud of what the Murphysboro Fire Department has done for our adults and children living with Muscular Dystrophy,” says Kyla Evans, Fundraising Coordinator for MDA. “A special thank you goes out to the Murphysboro community as well. Your support is greatly appreciated and the funds raised will all stay local, right here in Southern Illinois.”
Besides the Boot Drive, the fire department hosted its 3rd Annual Wiffle Ball & Washer Tournament back in July. It was a huge success which included 6 teams from the Murphysboro area. Special thanks goes out to the following businesses who sponsored the tournament: Classic Garden Ornaments, LTD, B & B Management, PLP Battery Supply, Venegoni Horrell Distributing Co., Silkworm, Inc., Ihle Florists, Cinnamon Lane Flowers & Gifts, Arby’s, 17th Street Bar & Grill, Napa, Plaza Tire, Cindy B’s, Southern Illinois Healthcare, Kroger, Wal-Mart, Craine Heating & Air, SI Dermatology, Egyptian Electric Co-Op, St. Louis Cardinals, Wright’s Do-It Center, Annie Mae’s, Neal Tire and the City of Murphysboro.
Muscular Dystrophy treatments and cures carry tremendous expenses; $30 per flu shot, $74 per minute of research, $100 per support group session, $150 per physical, occupational or respiratory therapy consultation, $300 per initial diagnostic work-up at an MDA clinic, $500 per annual repair of wheelchair or leg braces, and $800 per child attending a summer camp are among the services provided. MDA is a privately funded non-profit organization, so these expenses are solely covered by donations received from fundraisers such as the “Fill-The-Boot” program.
