A major drug bust netting thousands of dollars in cash and more than 100 cannabis plants with a street value up to $500,000 occurred Monday evening, Sept. 26, at 443 Murphy St. in Murphysboro, according to Illinois State Police.
Stephen G. Kopecky, 29, who lived at that home, was arrested and charged with unlawful production of cannabis plants and the manufacturing or delivery of more than 500 grams of cannabis -- both felonies, according to Illinois State Police at District 13 in DuQuoin. He was being held at the Jackson County Jail, pending a first appearance.
Kopecky was arrested without incident by "several members" of the Illinois State Police and the Illinois State Police Southern Illinois Drug Task Force, according to state police. The Murphysboro Fire Department also assisted with potential electrical and ventilation hazards, according to state police.
A spokesman with the Illinois State Police at DuQuoin, who asked not to be identified, classified the bust as "major."
"Any time you can arrest someone selling illegal drugs it is always a good bust," the spokesman said.
The spokesman said the MFD was on the scene in case of electrical or ventilation problems.
"People involved in the manufacturing of cannabis (inside a building) must rely on high watt lights. This home's electrical had been modified for that."
Asked about a lengthy investigation, the spokesman said "it was not lengthy, but it didn't start yesterday either."
Asked about a prior record for Kopecky, the spokesman said he could not comment.
A computer check of Jackson County records lists no prior reports for a Stephen G. Kopecky.
