Murphysboro Police Officers were called to the intersection of Highway 13 and Country Club Road at 9:28 a.m. on Tuesday in reference to a truck versus passenger car traffic accident.
Arriving officers located the passenger car heavily damaged in the intersection. The box truck had left the roadway and came to a rest on the south side of Highway 13, just past the intersection.
Witnesses indicated that the car turned left in front of the truck, and was struck on the passenger side by the truck.
The driver, and lone occupant of the car, Donald Leggans, 72, of Murphysboro, was transported by ambulance to Carbondale Memorial Hopsital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:14 a.m.
The drive of the truck, Daniel Batz, 30, of Florissant, Mo., refused treatment at the scene. He was cited by the Illinois State Police for log book violations.
The accident is still under investigation. Murphysboro Officers were assisted at the scene by the Murphysboro Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, and the Illinois State Police.
