Leon M. McNeely, age 86, of Carbondale, died at 5:20AM, Friday, January 15, 2010 at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Carbondale.

He was born on November 21, 1923 in Marion, IL to Lawrence and Lillie (Mouser) McNeely.  He married Betty McCormick on June 2, 1945.  She preceded him in death on September 27, 2004.

He was a member and deacon of the University Baptist Church since 1952.  

He worked at Kroger Company for over 7 years and then worked at New Era Dairy and Prairie Farms for over 30 years.  He was the custodian for the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale.  He also worked at SIU-C as lawn maintenance.  He loved to cook and was a gardener.

He is survived by 1 daughter, Karen Jean McMinn of Carbondale; 1 son, Kevin Lee (Nancy) McNeely of Springfield, IL; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, 1 sister, Dorothy Taylor and 1 brother, Thomas Stephens.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM, Monday, January 18, 2010 at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home, old Rt 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro with Rev. Robert Goepfert officiating.  Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00PM, Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the University Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
