Hi, I can remember back to when people used to make their own soap. One of my mother-in-laws was one of them. I watched her one day while she was making soap, and she only used three ingredients: 1 can of lye, 5 pounds of lard, and 21 ounces of distilled water. It always turned out good. She always let the mixture set for six hours to let it set and get ready to cut. Another thing that people made was their own clothes. My sister Myrtle was a wiz at making blouses, skirts, dresses, kids coats, and hats to match. She even made boys and men's suits. I did some sewing for my kids, too, after I got my electric sewing machine. I made a lot of their clothes, and I was shocked when my youngest daughter, Linda, who was a cheerleader, came home from school one day and told me she volunteered my services to make new outfits. I couldn't refuse. They wore white turtleneck sweaters, and they wanted red and white skirts to wear with them. The skirts needed to be flared and made up with one red panel and one white panel, with about 6-8 panels each. So I made them, and they wore them. I was a very active mother in those days. I was President of the "mother's Club," and was Room Mother for each of my four children. I went to each one of their 8th grade trips, and drove a car load. I also drove a car load when their basketball teams played out of town. I enjoyed all of it. I had a lot of support from the other mothers, and appreciated that. My gem...
