Murphysboro, Ill. -

Do you remember when you used to anticipate walking in the door and checking your telephone answering machine to hear all the people who tried to call while you were out? I remember when my husband and I were courting, and we would have a fight. All day at work I would wonder if he had called yet and left that apology message that I so rightly deserved. Now there's a thrill my children will never experience. Unless of course they dare to turn off their cell phones for five minutes.
Sweet anticipation. Not much of that left in the fast paced world in which we live. We've moved on to instant everything. From instant coffee to instant messages, and everything in between, it's all available at the touch of a button. I finally became yesterday's news and opened a facebook account. Of course, everyone else has moved on to twitter. But at least I'm there, and I'm not exactly trying to keep up, just catch up.
One thing I do love about my new fb toy is being able to look over and see all of my friends who are available to chat with. With just a pop of a button, we are face to face. Perhaps a little reminiscent of the old "party line" telephones. Maybe, or just a new spin on letter writing. Except for these letters, unfortunately, will never be preserved in the annals of history. Just deleted and forgotten....! Kind of sad, because I know that I, for one, am saying some really profound things during these little chat sessions. LOL! Example: Me: What's up? Them: Nuttin'! Me: K! Them: TTYL! Me: K, bye! Good, huh? And my great great grandchildren will never know. Tis a shame, I think.
I heard all the buzz a few months ago about how everything will soon be converted onto computers. That telephones and newspapers and even hard cover books will soon be obsolete. These would all be available at the touch of a button from your trusty new laptop. I just laugh and say, as I have disciplined my children sternly for, "Whatever!" You will have to pry my copy of the local newspaper from my ink stained fingers. And I just can't get my big old Mac in the restroom to catch up on a little reading. Sorry, but I think the future guessers missed by a mile on that one.
While times are certainly achangin'', and now I tuck my telephone in my pocket instead of hanging it on my wall, some things will always be! A good book, dog-eared and tear stained, signed by the author, a favorite newspaper, a good cup of home brewed coffee...ahh, these are a few of my favorite things. And old favorites never become obsolete, they just grow better with the years. Take my husband for example...
