Oh my goodness, I am falling in love. He is dark and handsome. Big brown eyes, and a farmers tan already in April! He follows me around like a puppy dog, hangs on every word I say, and I believe he simply adores me!
"HE" is my 2 year old grandson Rustin Rieger! I have five grandchildren, and with three young children still at home, the opportunity to spend one on one time with any one of them is rare.
My grown daughters think mama's house is Noah's Ark, and they always bring them two by two! However, today all three of mine are in school, and my daughter Amber called and asked me to watch her youngest, the 2 year old! Oh, the joys of toddlin' two. Errand running consisted of to the post office then home for a diaper change, to the grocery then home for a diaper change, to the office to write this column and YES! We need to head home for another diaper change! Now I am remembering why mommies carry diaper bags. And why I quit this madness six years ago with my baby Abby!
But, I am very much enjoying this special day in spite of diaper duty. We shared a piece of strawberry shortcake, and he provided the background music with his mmmmmmm's with every bite we took. If the way to a lil' man's heart is through his stomach, grandma is certainly winning him over. And he reminded me of the joys of having a little boy around, as he ooohed and ahhhed over the construction trucks and cranes on the high way as we passed. He was delighted with the choo choo train that passed grandma's house. "Choo Chooo" he said with a big grin standing with his nose pressed against the front door screen.
And I have decided I want more of these one on one days. It is so fun getting to know little Rustin without a crowd hanging around. He is such a good boy, very happy, and a little on the quiet side. I would have never known that with the screaming crowd and him right in the middle of it. Probably a good idea for me to make a special point to spend a little one on one with each of my grand babies. And with grand babies still being born, and no end in sight, Tom and I are wondering --- when are he and I are going to have the time for a little one on one ourselves?
