Three Murphysboro High School wrestlers won titles last Saturday when the Red Devils hosted their own Class A Regional Tournament.
Most expected Jake Miller and Brad Sauer to win their weight classes. However, Trey Topp's win at 103 pounds may have been a bit of a surprise. But not to Murphysboro coach Dan Baker.
"Trey has wrestled good in big tournaments,'' Baker said. "He's been in big tournaments, and he does well in them.
"I kept telling him all along that he could win this. He went out and wrestled well."
Topp received a bye in the first round, then won a 15-8 decision over West Frankfort's Alec Meier in the semifinals. That win set up a showdown with Herrin's Steven Matuszak for the title.
Matuszak took the lead early, and was still leading, 7-4, midway through the second period before Topp turned things around and pinned Matuszak in 3:39.
"(trey) is a slow starter,'' Baker said. "He was going to come on. When we fell behind 7-4 we were still right there.
"Then they got into a position where the kid was trying to pin Trey, and Trey just got the upper hand on him."
Miller mowed through his opponents in the 145-pound weight class.
Miller's day began with a 39-second pin of Benton's JR Mocaby in the quarterfinals. He then made short work of Anna-Jonesboro's Preston Brimm, winning by pin in 51 seconds.
In the championship match at 145 pounds, Miller pinned Herrin's Drake Holland in 3:55.
"Jake did what he always does,'' Baker said. "which is being a good technician and winning the match."
Sauer had a fairly easy time of it at 285 pounds. He won via a bye in the opening round, then pinned Johnston City's David Adams in 1:46 in their semifinal battle. Sauer would then win the championship when he pinned Herrin's Devon Lohman in 2:36.
So, the Red Devils are only sending three wrestlers to the Robinson Sectional this weekend. But there could have been more, and five other Murphysboro wrestlers competed for third place at the regional. But none were able to win and move on.
"I didn't expect five kids to go for third,'' Baker said. "We had a couple of our key guys out and our backup kids came up and did well. I'm real pleased."
Nick Kupcikevicius narrowly missed advancing when he dropped a 5-4 decision to Carterville's Luke Eaton in overtime at 112 pounds.
BJ Greer also lost a heartbreaker, falling 5-4 to Benton's Clint Everd. Greer spent the final 11 seconds of the match trying to get an escape to send the bout into overtime. But he was never able to break free and Everd held on for the win.
At 160 pounds, Zack Todd dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to Carterville's Kefren Hunter.
Napoleon Hughes wrestled for third at 170 pounds, but fell to Anna-Jonesboro's Brett Turner, 9-7.
Kory Graff was the final Red Devil wrestler vying for third place, but he was pinned in 1:31 by Johnston City's JR Roberts and had to settle for a fourth-place finish.
In the team competition, Herrin ran away with the title, finishing with 190.5 points. Benton finished second with 154.5. Rounding out the eight-team field were Anna-Jonesboro (1190, Murphysboro (110), Pinckneyville (104), West Frankfort (85.5), Johnston City (52), and Carterville (40).
