Spring is almost here. But how does one know that for sure?
All one has to do to know it's close is look for the dates that youngsters can sign up to play Little League baseball and softball.
For kids in Murphysboro, those two days are Saturday, March 13, and Saturday, March 20.
But for those that are the leaders of Murphysboro Baseball, Inc., work is already underway for the upcoming season.
MBI is currently working to get repairs finished from the storm that roared through the area last May. Lonnie Miner, president of the MBI Board of Directors, said the work is coming along.
"We lost four dugouts,'' Miner said. "We still have work to do. I'd say we're about halfway through it."
While that work will continue, the big focus will be on the upcoming registrations. Last year between 500 and 600 kids played ball at MBI.
"Right now, we're getting ready for registration,'' Miner said. "Come registration day we have a lot to do and we have a very short period of time to do it."
Once registration is completed all the names and information are put into the computer and the team drafts are held the following week.
"April 1 is our first official day when practices are able to start,'' Miner said. "So we have to get everything done by then."
Coaches and Team Coordinators will then meet on April 14 at the VFW.
"That's where we all get together and take care of the what if's that we need to get taken care prior to the season getting started,'' Miner said.
Just three days after that meeting, the Game Day Prep and Lunch will take place at 9 a.m. at the MBI Fields in Harrison.
"That's something that we need as much help as we can possibly get,'' Miner said. "There is a lot to do out there.
"We have a lot of parents and coaches that really contribute a lot to MBI, and we really do appreciate that. But we need as much help as we can get."
That help will get the facility ready for games, which begin on May 8.
"It'll be here before you know it,'' Miner said.
