The Carbondale Tournament was not kind to the Murphysboro High School girls varsity basketball team earlier this week.
The Lady Red Devils dropped their opening game in the tournament to Collinsville, 56-14, on Monday. Then lost to Carbondale on Tuesday, 57-28.
Against the Terriers, Murphysboro fell behind early and was never able to recover.
Carbondale raced out to a 21-6 lead after one period of play, and went on to a comfortable 34-14 lead at halftime.
The Lady Red Devils entered the game coming off some games where turnovers were a problem. But that wasn't the biggest problem on Tuesday.
"Turnovers were a part of it,'' said Murphysboro co-coach Staci Hickam. "And we weren't running offense very well.
"Our inside shots weren't very good. But when we ran our offense we got some good looks."
Alyssa Sturgeon led Murphysboro with 10 points, while Cassie Torgesen and Katelyn Kemp scored four points apiece.
While Murphysboro struggled offensively against Carbondale, it was even worse on Monday against Collinsville, which led 18-6 after the first quarter, and 32-10 at halftime.
"We just didn't play,'' Hickam said. "You could see our kids looking at (Collinsville) when we were warming up.
"They were big at every position, and we played like we were scared of them."
Hilary Brewer led Murphysboro against Collinsville, scoring six points.
