Red Devils win first two at Sparta Mid-Winter Classic

Murphysboro opened up a 17-point lead in the third quarter, then held off a furious rally by Du Quoin before finally beating the Indians, 54-45, last Wednesday night at the Sparta Mid-Winter Classic.
The Red Devils (13-5) used a 9-0 run late in the first period and early in the second to build a 19-12 advantage. They would eventually settle for a 26-17 lead at halftime.
Murphysboro would start the second half strong, getting a steal and a layup from Pierre House and a 3-pointer from Mitchell Rose to take a 31-17.
A 3-pointer by Kyle Miller, and  a bucket by House with 4:44 remaining in the third period gave the Red Devils a 36-19 lead.
It looked like it was over at that point, but Du Quoin had other ideas, and the Indians scored the next six points to pull within 11 at 36-25.
It was 40-27 with a little over a minute left in the third before Daulton Beltz drilled a 3-pointer, then scored with a second left in the frame to pull Du Quoin to within eight points at 40-32.
"Our kids have to learned that when you've got a team down, you have to keep them down and put them away,'' Murphysboro coach Daryl Murphy said. "We just kind of went into a lull."
A free throw by Beltz to open the fourth quarter made it a seven-point game, and Murphysboro maintained that advantage over the next minute or so.
The Red Devils actually pushed their lead back to double digits with 4:38 left in the game when Zane Heller drove in for a layup to make it 46-36.
Du Quoin would follow with back-to-back baskets by Brandon Williams to pull within six at 46-40 with three minutes remaining in the contest.
Murphysboro was clinging to a 48-42 lead before House converted a three-point play to make it 51-42 with 1:59 to go. But Du Quoin answered with three straight points to get within six at 51-45 with 47 seconds left.
Drew Novara gave Murphysboro a seven-point cushion when he made a free throws with 31 seconds left, and after a Du Quoin turnover, House drilled two charity shots to make it 54-45.
Du Quoin would then miss on the other end of the floor and Miller grabbed the rebound and the Red Devils ran out the clock.
House led Murphysboro with a game-high 27 points. Rose finished with nine points.
John Galik paced Du Quoin with 13 points. He scored Du Quoin's first 12 points of the game, then was limited to a free throw over the final three quarters of action.
"We did a lot better job on him after the first quarter,'' Murphy said of Galik.
Du Quoin got hep getting back into the game when it scored after several turnovers by the Red Devils in the second half.
"We're playing kind of careless with the ball right now,'' Murphy said. "But we're still winning. We beat Du Quoin, and that's another win in the column. We're tickled to death to get it."
The Red Devils also won their first game in the tournament, beating Cairo 66-48 despite turning the ball over 22 times.
Murphysboro was able to overcome all of the turnovers because it used a 22-2 run in the second and third period to open up a 42-19 lead.
The Red Devils were nursing a 20-17 advantage late in the second quarter before closing the period with an 11-2 spurt for a 31-19 halftime lead.
Murphysboro then opened up the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers by Rose to go up 37-19. A free throws by House followed, and buckets by Steven Eldridge and Heller made it 42-19 with 5:14 left in the third period.
The Red Devils closed the third quarter with a 52-33 advantage, and Cairo never got closer than 14 points over the final eight minutes of play.
Rose led Murphysboro with 16 points in the game. Heller added 10 points.
Jalen Childs and Darrell Jackson scored 11 points apiece for the Pilots.
